Our interest in historic structures extends back many years. Latchstring is comprised of a family team of preservationists whose interest in saving period structures goes back to the 1970s. Our first endeavor was to replace the 18th century log cabin on our own home farm in Virginia that had been destroyed in the 1970s. We searched for and found a cabin of similar age located within our same county, which we dismantled and moved to our farm where it was restored. It was a daunting task for an inexperienced but determined historical buff and his small group of workers. When the project was finally completed, we were hooked, and Latchstring was born.
Through the years, we have learned much about various types of log cabins and old post and beam houses with their dependencies that were originally constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Our major area of interest and experience lies in the period structures of Virginia and surrounding states. Always our goal has been to save any house or part thereof which were original to the site. They were dismantled and immediately stored in a dry building to halt further deterioration until the structure could be restored.
As we look back over our forty years of experience, we continue to be in awe of the astounding workmanship, materials, and dedication of these early homes and we have learned, among other things, to pay close attention to the period of each structure.
